This is Jim Halsall's fourth CD and features jazz classics as well as his own jazzy arrangements of various pop songs.

The Ipanema beach is where it all started. Or is it ?
It is said that a beautiful young girl was observed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, the composers, as they sat outside a bar in Ipanema Rio de Janeiro. She would walk by them on the way to the beach, the most beautiful of the Ipanema girls.
The girl in question is thought to be Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto a beautiful 15 year old who was "tall and tanned and young and lovely" quite an inspiration, and the song was born there and then.
*
As is life, the true story is more mundane. The song was composed for a musical comedy titled 'Dirigível'. Vinicius de Moraes wrote the words and Antonio Carlos Jobim composed the music.Later Girl from Ipanema lyrics where composed in English by Norman Gimbel.

                                          THE LYRICS
Norman Gimbel

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes"a-a-ah!"
When she walks she's like a samba that
Swings so cool and sways so gentle,
That when she passes, each one she passes goes "a-a-ah!"

Oh, but I watch her so sadly How can I tell her I love her?
Yes, I would give my heart gladly,
But each day when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead not at me

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes I  smile, but she doesn't see
She just doesn't see,She just doesn't see
